Minoxidil shedding: why it happens and how long it lasts

Updated

You start minoxidil to keep your hair, and a few weeks later more of it is in the drain. It feels like the opposite of what should happen. For most men it is a normal, temporary phase.

Why it happens

Every hair cycles through growing, resting, and shedding. Minoxidil pushes follicles that are resting back into a new growth phase sooner. The old resting hairs get pushed out to make room for new ones.

So the shed is old hair leaving early, not healthy hair being lost. That is why it is often read as a sign the treatment is taking effect.

When it starts and how long it lasts

  • Starts: usually 2 to 8 weeks after you begin.
  • Lasts: typically a few weeks, often settling within about two months.
  • Judge results: at around 6 months, not before. Take monthly photos so you can compare honestly.

Oral minoxidil can cause a similar early shed.

What to do (and not do)

  • Do not stop. Stopping during the shed means you get the loss without the regrowth that follows.
  • Stay consistent. Missed doses do more damage to results than the shed does.
  • Keep your haircut short and textured while it settles. See haircuts for thinning hair.
  • See a doctor if heavy shedding continues past about 4 months, if you get patches, or if your scalp is very irritated. Liquid minoxidil irritates some scalps more than foam.

Common questions

Does minoxidil shedding mean it is working?

Often, yes. Shedding early on usually means resting hairs are being replaced by new growing ones. It is not a guarantee, so judge the real result at 6 months with photos.

Can I avoid the minoxidil shed?

Not reliably. Not everyone gets a noticeable shed, but there is no proven way to prevent it. Starting earlier, while you have more hair, makes it less visible.

What happens if I stop minoxidil?

Any hair it helped you keep or regrow is gradually lost over the following months. Minoxidil only works while you use it.
